Getting treatment for your child

Your path to getting Acthar for your child begins when your doctor reaches a diagnosis of infantile spasms and, together, you decide that Acthar is the right treatment for your baby. Your involvement doesn't end there, though. You'll be a critical member of your baby’s support team throughout therapy. Even if the process seems difficult, remember that your doctor has determined this is the best option for your baby.

Mallinckrodt, the distributor of Acthar, is committed to making sure that children who need the treatment have access to it. To help in that effort, they have created the Acthar Support & Access Program (A.S.A.P.) to coordinate the exchange of information between you and your doctor's office, your insurance company, and the specialty pharmacy that will deliver the treatment.

While your first priority is your baby, it's very important that you stay engaged with A.S.A.P. to prevent any delays in your baby's treatment. You'll need to answer your mobile phone even if you don't recognize the number, check messages frequently, and return calls promptly until you receive the shipment of Acthar.

Once your baby's Acthar treatment starts, remember that children under age 2 may experience specific side effects such as weight gain, irritability, and an increased risk of infection. Your doctor will monitor your child for increased blood pressure, symptoms of Cushing's syndrome (a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of some hormones), and thickening of the heart muscle (called cardiac hypertrophy).
